A little bit about what volunteering entails:
We have a range of volunteer roles available, and we will work with you to find the best fit for your skills and interests. Whether it’s animal care & rehabilitation, leaf collection, wildlife rescue, maintenance, fundraising or education, we are confident that you will find a role that suits you. All roles contribute to the achievement of our goals.
Mosswood operates 7 days a week all year round and we have two shifts a day. Morning shift starts at 9am. Afternoon shift starts at 5pm. Shifts run 1 – 3 hrs depending on the number of animals in care.
You will be paired with a buddy, an experienced volunteer to learn from until you are confident and equipped to do shifts by yourself.
The biggest role at Mosswood is caring for unique wildlife, and of course cleaning up after them.
To achieve this on a morning shift a large part is washing dirty towels, raking up poop, cleaning and setting up enclosures and assisting with general care.
However, the goal is to build you up to helping with feeding too!
Please note, in the interest of the animal, new volunteers don’t get to handle the animals or feed the joey koalas.
On the afternoon shift a huge part is going out to source, cut and bring back to Mosswood the fresh eucalyptus leaf for the koalas in care to eat and enjoy! The fresh leaf then gets put up in enclosures for the koalas who are currently in care, this happens daily.
A little bit about what we require from you:
You must be over 18 to volunteer at Mosswood and have a general, basic level of fitness to be able to complete the day to day tasks required.
We ask our volunteers to do one shift a week. This is so we can get to know you and you can get to know us and all the animals that come into our care.
The jobs at Mosswood can change daily just as the wildlife does so the more frequent the volunteers the more consistency for the animals and knowledge of what’s going on.
Generally, we encourage a minimum of 1 year commitment to being a volunteer at Mosswood as there is significant time and effort put into training up each new volunteer.
